Health care Providers can Insure their income.

We insure so many healthcare providers, we have been remiss lately in not underscoring the importance of taking the proper time and allocation of resources to insure our ability to work.  The income derived from the services provided is completely dependent on your health, and often physical skill. Whether you stand for hours at a time, or you use your hands to manipulate and adjust patients, having physical health and strength is mandatory to earning a living as a healthcare provider. For years, our agency has provided disability insurance to replace the income that you depend upon if you can’t work. Disability insurance is purchased by monthly benefit amounts, is underwritten according to your health and work and income history and variables, and often once you lock in a low rate, the policy will remain priced at that rate.  This means that the earlier you act to purchase this important insurance, the less you will pay each year for this protection. Disability Insurance policies protect su ...

What is protected by Employment Practices Liability Insurance?

One of the benefits of obtaining your (discounted) medical malpractice insurance through The Doctors’ Insurance Agency/The Doctors’ Company is: you receive important business and ‘boss’ liability insurance for great discounted prices as well.  Underwriting and management at TDC have worked for years with NAS insurance Services to bring these complementary products to our physicians. It seems that almost every practice is confronted with the threat of one employee, or co owner, junior or senior person or partner who feels neglected or picked on  or both. Recently, a Pediatrician made an innocent comment to one of the visiting nurses, working there on contract only. He said, yes, it would be nice to get together with everyone off site to work on all of our relationships.  Finally, reducing some of that communication to an email and pulling it out of context, it was made to look like an invitation to meet off site, away from the office.  The group had to defend thi ...

Stand Alone Tail Policy can help you land a new position!

With the rise of hospital employment offers in the country, The Doctors’ Insurance Agency is happy to assist physicians with the important purchase of a ‘stand alone’ tail insurance policy. Tail Insurance Covers you for claims not yet known or reported, based on events that occurred in the past.  A tail insurance policy can run for 18 months, or as long as indefinitely.  The reason we describe this as a ‘stand alone’ policy is that normally, these policies are purchased when the last policy in force is cancelled and the tail cost is triggered (normally within the first 60 days).  The timing of purchasing tail is integral to the product acquisition.  This is because the longer you wait, the more likely there is (or at least, the perception is) that an event has already occurred.  This theory is what underlies the idea of a 60 day window.  Like everything in the world of medical malpractice insurance, timing is key.  The quicker you respond, the ...

Do Medispas need Liability Insurance?

The Doctors’ Insurance Agency insures Medispas for medical malpractice in California and in other states.  We  work hard to protect our individual physicians from liability claims that do not involve their medical practices. Protecting their limit of insurance may sound silly, actually, isn’t that what the insurance is there for?...to protect them from claims against their personal assets. Regardless of the claim’s origins?.. Actually, consider that individual medical malpractice carriers reward physicians for good claims histories Even the renewability of their policies and the policies of their partners, employed physicians and associates can be effected by the individual claims history. In a conversation recently with one of our Plastic Surgery Centers, we had this very discussion;  Do they need a separate ‘stand alone’ medical spa insurance policy (especially if the spa is not separate from the plastic surgery center): Indeed, a medical malpractice insura ...

Long Term Care Insurance; 10 Million Baby Boomers in ‘double jeopardy’

There are many ‘baby boomers’ that are in the same boat. That is , they are taking care of their parents and their children. According to Metropolitan Life Insurance, At a time when many should be enjoying the last years of their own children at home, they are spending time and energy and money caring for their aging parents. There are There are nearly 10 million adult children over the age of 50 that care for their aging parents.  That is 1 in 4 adult children, mostly Baby Boomers.  These family caregivers are themselves aging as well as providing care at a time when they also need to be planning and saving for their own retirement.  As a result, for these caregivers, it is a case of “double jeopardy,” according to the latest Metfile Study of Caregiving Costs to Working Caregivers. This study that I read recently found that The percentage of adult children providing personal care and/or financial assistance to a parent has more than tripled over the past 15 ...

Business and Management Liability Insurance Medical Group Providers:

CM&F Insurance Brokers, describe Directors and Officers Liability Insurance as a policy designed to provide financial protection for the directors, officers, and the corporate entity which they serve in the event that lawsuits alleging mismanagement of the corporation are brought against the directors/officers, either individually or collectively. Since virtually all corporations have bylaws in which the corporate entity, in the vast majority of cases, bears the financial responsibility of indemnifying directors/officers for their alleged misdeeds. A D&O policy is a financial tool through which the corporate entity can be reimbursed for its costs in defending and settling lawsuits against its directors/officers. In certain circumstances, such as bankruptcy or derivative lawsuits, where the corporation cannot indemnify its directors/officers, the D&O policy affords front-line financial protection for the directors/officers. So, what on earth does that mean?? To our Doctors’ Company Physici ...

Trends in Medicine and how they effect medical malpractice insurance premiums

The Doctors Insurance Agency continues to work hard to find all specialties the lowest premium possible with The Doctors Company.  The trend shows that rates are increasing in many states, even if not yet California.  There are many who believe that we are at the absolute lowest level that any Carrier can manage.  Attorney's Fees continue to increase, the number of claims per year is increasing, and there is only one way they can go!    The bottoming of rates will push carriers to start offering a wider variety of credits in order to keep the least risky policyholders.  Reserve funds will likely be tapped and endorsements used to hold rates down through this year.  The Doctors' Insurance Agency, representing The Doctors' Company can help you and your medical group aligns with the organization which will provide you with these medical malpractice insurance discounts.  Almost all carriers are heavily discounting to retain their good doctors and attract new business. &nb ...
