A Common Offer To Retired Physician is To Sign a Contract as a Medical Director

February 18, 2015

Many physicians who retire from the practice of medicine and accordingly accept their free retirement tail realize that they miss contributing; they miss working and using their medical license to positively impact our society.

And, a common offer to retired (or physicians looking to make a change) is to sign a contract as a medical director for a variety of facilities. If this opportunity presents to you, you might consider a medical director policy:

These policies look like this:

MEDICAL DIRECTOR ENDORSEMENT

In consideration of the premium charged for the Policy, it is hereby understood and agreed that:

  1. Clause II PERSONS INSURED, paragraph (a) is deleted in its entirety and replaced with the
    following:

if the Named Insured designated in Item 1 of the Declarations is an individual, the person so designated but only with respect to the conduct of his/her business as a Medical Director.. For the purposes of Clause II PERSONS INSURED, (a) Medical Director shall now have the following meaning:

(4) Good faith exams or chart analysis

(5) Treatment review

(6) Consultation with other medical professionals and/or patients

(7) Prescription management

And, it is also important to understand what the policy does not cover: (although, you can obtain this coverage through another more comprehensive policy).

Medical Director does not include:

1. Supervision and oversight of any physician including but not limited to a surgeon, osteopath, podiatrist, orthodontist, chiropractor, psychiatrist, psychologist or dentist;

2. Oversight of general administration of facilities, including but not limited to financial and employment related activities,

3. Any primary or direct patient care services unless included under the Named Insured’s Professional Services stated in Item 11 of the Declarations.

All other terms and conditions of this Policy remain unchanged. The Medical Director Liability Policy can also include direct patient care.
