Not all Medical Director Contracts are Alike and They Don’t or Shouldn’t all Cost the Same

February 11, 2015

The problem is: not all agency’s or brokers understand that. It is important to represent exactly what you’re doing on the application.

There are three tiers of medical director work:

  • Administrative only
  • Indirect Patient care (supervising other MD’s or Mid-Levels)
  • Direct Patient Care.

We need to make sure your medical director policy is written to protect you for all three (if that is what you’re doing).

Contracts for independent contractor Medical directors are increasingly more common.

They make sense; many medical facilities are required to have an independent ‘eye’ overlooking the internal processes and procedures.  It is important to be an objective and hard judge of the quality of patient safety, communication and care within all types of medical facilities.

Independent medical evaluation

Medical Directors can singlehandedly change the experience of a medical group by introducing new, tough hiring and re credentialing procedures; they can make rounds in nursing homes, train, take the nursing care to new levels, they can interact with patients’ families and independently recommend tough changes.

In our quest for better care, with greater access, for less money; Medical Directors are a big part of the solution.

The right policy for the Medical Director Malpractice Insurance requires an understanding of what the contract outlines; if you’re only doing peer review, assessing procedures and establishing protocols, that is administrative only.

You may be called upon to sign off on charts and review the services provided, confer with the mid-level and medical staff providers about the utilization, treatment and care.  This is clearly another level, a step up from medical director, administrative only. Policies insuring this work are priced generally in the $ 2,500 - $ 4,000 range.

The Doctors’ Insurance Agency has been working for years with The Doctors’ Company, Admiral, Evanston and Lloyds of London to deliver the right policy for the work you’re doing.

You could pay as low as $ 1,000 or as high as $ 10,000 per year for 1 Million/ 3 Million depending on the work that you do and the territory in which you work.
