What about Locum Tenens?

For all policies renewing after 6/1/2005 The Doctors Company has instituted new rules concerning locum tenens coverage.

TDC-insured physicians and medical groups will now be responsible for tracking their own locum tenens usage, and are no longer required to inform The Doctors Company in advance of their locum tenens needs. Insured physicians and medical groups will however want to note the following general guidelines for this new locum tenens arrangement:

1. Each TDC-insured physician or ancillary (NP, PA, OD, CRNA) is allowed up to 30 locum tenens dates per policy year. Beyond 30 days, other circumstances would need to be reviewed by the underwriters.

2. One locum tenens replacement can work a total of 30 days per policy year for all policyholders combined on a policy.

3. The locum tenens replacement must be of like specialty/training/certification to the TDC-insured policyholder.

4. One locum tenens replacement can only cover for one TDC-insured physician or ancillary, respectively, per day.

Please refer to your new policy language for further details. It is important that the practice keep detailed records of locum tenens usage should The Doctors Company require a locum tenens audit review.

What about Tail Coverage?

Tail Coverage or Extended Reporting Periods offer additional coverage to a physician when they retire, leave a group or join a self-insured organization.  Tail coverage can be purchased for an additional premium.  Please contact your agent for more information about the process involved in acquiring tail coverage.  Physicians who meet certain criteria will qualify for free tail coverage when they retire completely from the practice of medicine.  Again, we invite you to contact your agent to discuss your needs and the eligibility requirements.
